Galerie Derouillon invites Salon 94 to exhibit Zipiao Zhang's first personal European exhibition.
Zhang Zipiao (born in China in 1993) attended the Maryland Institute College of Art and graduated from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2015. Bacon’s painting Figure with Meat (1954), housed at the school’s Modern Wing, inspired the artist during this period. Zhang Zipiao’s lush, monumental, and oil painted abstractions envelope the viewer. Zhang creates imagery through intricate layers and sweeping brushstrokes. Her rich palette and the physicality of her application form the foundation of psychologically charged compositions. Her physical monumental canvases of fleshy pinks, blood reds, and leaf greens feature entangled lines and contorting forms, deepening her exploration of the human body and organic matter. Her work resides in the collections of the Long Museum, Shanghai, and the Longlati Foundation, Shanghai.
Salon 94 is a contemporary art gallery founded by Jeanne Greenberg Rohatyn in 2002, located in a historic 17,500-square-foot building along New York’s eminent Museum Mile. Steeped in cultural history, the building on 3 East 89th Street remains an activated and innovative hub for visual art and design in the city.
